The Future of Trust and Retirement Technology | Five Questions With Ryan Alexis

By: Karen Sears

BACK

Trust and retirement organizations are facing changing client expectations, workforce challenges, and regulatory demands that are reshaping how they operate and serve clients. As Senior Vice President of Trust & Retirement Product and Operations at SS&C Black Diamond® Wealth Solutions, Ryan Alexis brings extensive experience across both the technology and operational sides of the business.

In this edition of our Five Questions With series, Ryan offers his perspective on the current climate facing trust and retirement organizations, what successful companies are doing differently, and where the industry is headed.

After more than 15 years with SS&C, what motivates you today, and what excites you most about the future?

The teammates and clients I work with motivate me every day. I am fortunate to be part of a team that is committed to supporting one another and helping our clients solve complex challenges. It’s incredibly rewarding to see my colleagues grow in their careers along the way.

Looking ahead, I am excited about growth opportunities in the bank and trust industry. We have had strong, early success bringing a full suite of trust services to market, but I believe we have only scratched the surface. Our value proposition continues to strengthen, and I look forward to helping drive our next phase of growth.

You now oversee both product strategy and daily operations. How does managing both areas enable you to make more informed decisions for clients?

My role gives me insight into every aspect of our business. From operations, I have firsthand knowledge of the day-to-day challenges clients face and what it takes to deliver exceptional service. And, for product, I can use those insights to shape our roadmap and prioritize the enhancements that will have the greatest impact.

Bringing those perspectives together helps us develop solutions that address real-world needs and deliver great technology and client experiences.

What are the main operational challenges clients share with you, and how is Black Diamond adapting to address them?

The biggest challenges today center on efficiency, talent acquisition and retention, and increasing regulatory and compliance requirements. These priorities are influencing Black Diamond’s product strategy and service offerings.

Our technology roadmap prioritizes the user experience and operational efficiency through streamlined workflows and an intuitive interface. We are expanding Managed Services as more clients look to strategic partners to address staffing challenges and scale their operations. Additionally, we are closely monitoring the regulatory landscape to help clients meet their compliance needs.

What qualities do you consistently observe in trust and retirement organizations that successfully adapt to change?

Successful organizations embrace change, invest in their people, modernize their technology, and continually evaluate their processes.

They also build strong partnerships with their technology providers, viewing them as strategic collaborators. Most importantly, they challenge the status quo instead of relying on “the way it’s always been done.” This approach helps them adapt, innovate, and position themselves for long-term success.

Looking ahead, which trends do you believe will most impact trust and retirement technology over the next three to five years?

I believe the biggest trends will include AI and automation, modern digital experiences, and an aging workforce.

Most clients are still in the early stages of adopting AI, but I expect that to accelerate as firms use it to automate routine tasks and help employees focus on higher-value work. As experienced professionals retire, the use cases for AI will expand to include capturing institutional knowledge and equipping the next generation with intuitive technology.

Clients must also meet rising expectations for seamless digital experiences, real-time information, and self-service capabilities. Organizations that embrace these trends will deliver a better client experience.

The future of trust and retirement will be shaped by how effectively organizations put technology to work. The ones that stand out will use these capabilities to support their people, simplify their work, and create greater value for clients. For Ryan, innovation and adaptability will be key to navigating what lies ahead.
