As technology stacks grow, wealth management firms and trust companies must create a connected, streamlined ecosystem. In his role as Senior Director of Partnerships for SS&C Black Diamond® Wealth Solutions, Justin Wayne has observed integrations shift from basic data connections into more strategic, experience-driven partnerships.
In this edition of our Five Questions With series, Justin shares how Black Diamond approaches partnerships and outlines what firms should look for in a technology integration.
I started working on integrations 10+ years ago. Back then, the focus was on simply connecting systems and moving basic data between platforms. Today, wealth managers require more comprehensive solutions.
We are building deeper, two-way integrations that enable seamless workflows across the tools firms use every day. The expectation now is real-time connectivity, synchronized data, and a more native experience across systems.
With many new tools entering the market, how do you determine which partnerships are most valuable for Black Diamond clients?
We begin by staying closely engaged with our clients. We spend a lot of time listening to their challenges, understanding how they use technology, and identifying where integrations can add the most value.
We evaluate partnerships based on whether they help wealth managers deliver a better client experience or operate more efficiently. Those priorities guide where we invest.
Many of our strongest partnerships started because clients introduced us to solutions they were excited about. Our clients’ feedback plays a major role in shaping our strategy.
You have worked closely with high- and ultra-high-net-worth wealth management firms. Has this experience influenced your perspective on what wealth managers require from technology partners?
Every firm has its own approach to best serve its clients. As a result, technology needs to be flexible enough to support these unique approaches and value propositions.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Firms require connected systems, configurable workflows, and the flexibility to operate in ways that fit their business rather than within a standard model.
Our goal is to help firms of all sizes deliver a modern, differentiated client experience using the technology stack that works best for them.
What are the main challenges firms encounter when integrating multiple systems, and how does Black Diamond help address these issues?
One of the biggest challenges is connecting systems built around different data structures. For example, a CRM may organize data by individuals, while a portfolio management platform focuses on households or client relationships. Synchronizing, securing, and providing access to this data can be extremely complex.
We focus on building standardized integration frameworks that connect and synchronize a firm’s core data that powers everything from the client experience to firm-level advanced analytics. Just as importantly, we invest heavily in reliability so wealth managers can trust that those integrations are working consistently behind the scenes day in and day out.
Looking ahead, how do you expect the partner ecosystem to evolve in the coming years, and what opportunities might this create for wealth managers using Black Diamond?
The industry is moving toward more intelligent and flexible integrations, with AI playing a larger role in how systems connect and present information. AI will reshape both the systems that wealth managers rely on and how they spend their day.
For Black Diamond clients, this creates opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce friction between systems, and deliver more actionable insights in ways we never thought possible. As the ecosystem evolves, firms will be able to gain so much more flexibility in how they build and tailor their technology experience without many of the tradeoffs that existed in the pre-AI era.
As wealth management software continues to evolve, the trend is toward more connected, intelligent systems that reduce complexity. Black Diamond remains focused on helping firms operate more efficiently while delivering stronger client experiences.
